She wobbles on her bike and falls
I can’t, she says. You can, I say.
I hold her body steady,
then push her on her way.
Pedal hard, I tell her
as she tips from side to side—
I’m running now to catch her,
but she’s learning how to ride.
When she’s out beyond my reaching,
I hear her laugh and know
I’m doing more than teaching—
I’m helping her to go.
